  1. Plan ahead and set the right expectations – divorce is a true headache but sometimes it’s the only way to go on with your life.  By setting your expectations ahead of the process, you can set a plan and avoid spending thousands of dollars on litigating when an experienced attorney can handle everything for you.  This entire process will change your life for sure but doing the process with a plan in mind will not only make things easier for you but definitely situate your life where it needs to be and if children are involved, you can prepare them for what is coming.
  2. Prepare your finances – getting a divorce may mean you need to save up money, move to a cheaper place, and even get a new job.  The financial part of your divorce is vital for an easy transition and to prevent taking your life to instability, we always suggest to get real about your finances and prepare for every little scenario; the ideal, the best, and the worst-case scenario.  Another thing to consider is if you have a prenuptial agreement in place, aka, a prenup and if that’s the case, you must determine the financial rights of the assets and cash that both of you built together at some point of your lives.
  3. Plan for co-parenting and custody – the expectation is that the mother gets the kids, while the father sees the kids every other weekend or in the holidays; well that’s a thing from the past.  In modern times, divorce couples now share custody literally by 50/50 in every aspect of it, from responsibilities, school, extracurricular activities, and overall work as a mom and dad.  You even have to think about shift changes, arranging for last-minute traveling, and things of that nature.
  4. Get help from a lawyer who specializes in divorce – even though you know the ins and outs of your relationship, the law is something not many are aware of in detail and you need a lawyer that can fight for you and take you by the hand through the entire divorce process.  Find a lawyer who understands you, who wants to fight for you and who is willing to envision your case from the moment you sit down with them.  You have to come to the idea that you will spend a lot of time on personal aspects of your life and feeling comfortable with your lawyer is key to a successful case.
